Ang Mo Kio, meaning "red-haired man's bridge" in Hokkien, is rumored to be named after a British engineer, John Turnbull Thomson, who built a bridge in the area. It was one of the first towns in Singapore to be designed with a pedestrian-oriented concept, separating traffic from walkways.
